BrothersKeepers – Retreats for our Nations Wounded Veteran’s.
Imagine that you have been fighting for our country overseas… or training to go overseas, and you become injured and your life is completely changed. That is what some of our soldiers are coming back with… trying to put together the pieces that have been shattered. In a split second, your life can be an upheaval. However, thanks to people like Paul McCarthy, there are organizations like BrothersKeepers who looks after our Nation’s heroes.
What Are BrothersKeepers?
While on another forum, I came across Paul McCarthy is one of the founding members (along with founding members Jack and John Laudenslager) of the 501(c)(3) organization, BrothersKeepers. His best friend Jack was a Tech Sergeant for the United States Airforce who completed 5 tours in Afganistan and 1 tour in Iraq. To Paul, Jack was his best friend and hero. While talking to McCarthy, he retold his best friends story. “[He] was going out for Tier 1 team… he had made the team and was doing final training mission and had issues with the jump. He is now a C-4 quad”. Through his experience, Paul established BrothersKeepers, and through this organization, his best Jack and other Veterans are able to do anything they want. McCarthy recalled, “[He] Still skydives, hunts, paraglide, ski… you name it“
Although McCarthy has never served in the military, watching his best friend and hero Jack get hurt, and having the admiration on all of the military forces, he felt a calling to become the “voice for the heroes”.
McCarthy and Paul created a video to explain the mission of BrothersKeepers and shares their story of friendship, and how it created BrothersKeepers.
Where Do Donations Come From?
BrothersKeepers obtains all of their funding by using grassroots donations. Everyone who works for the organization, does it out of their own time and free will as volunteers. This past August, they were able to raise over $40,000 in just two weeks using a Facebook campaign. One of their biggest fundraisers is MusicFest, and next year they plan on having a luncheon connected with it. Skiing, water skiing, mountain biking, skydiving, running Lamborghinis and Ferrari’s down closed runway are just a few of our activities that are planned for these retreats.
They currently have three retreats slated for 2018. These retreats are opened to wounded veterans, wounded first respondings, and their families.
McCarthy stated, “Our Facebook tells a story, it’s a good chance to see who we are… like I said I am just a voice for the heroes… makes the story real easy when you have these men and women”. He continued by stating, “We are blessed by many supporters and love from many.”
